Commission Moves on Vacant Cloud Peak Building

The County Commissioners approved a measure to purchase the former Cloud Peak Energy Office on Gillette Avenue Thursday to expand the county’s operations.

Commissioner Mark Christensen advised that the 35-thousand-square-foot building will be purchased for $83 a square foot, a mere fraction of the cost for new county buildings, some of which have run as high as $200 or $300 a square foot.

“We’re going to get this at a fraction of what new space would cost,” Commission Chairman Rusty Bell commented. “This is something that’s being done for the future of Campbell County.”

In total, the building will cost the county approximately $2.9 million.

Talks regarding the future of Campbell County and how it would expand have been around for some time, Bell said. Purchasing the former Cloud Peak building will prove to be a significant investment that will meet the county’s needs well into the future.

The county has talked in several executive sessions on potential uses for the building, from providing new office space for the county to consolidating state office space that the county must provide per state statute, but nothing has been finalized yet.

“We’ll be working over that in the coming months,” said Bell.
