Attitudes towards marijuana continue to change, according to a survey by the Wyoming Survey and Analysis Center of the University of Wyoming. Nearly half of Wyoming supports legalization.

Between 2014 and 2018, the number of Wyoming residents who support allowing adults legal access to possess marijuana for personal use climbed from 37 percent to 49 percent.

Roughly 7 percent of those polled in the latest survey identified their county of residence as Campbell County, and 70 percent identified as Republican.

Support is highest among residents 18 to 24 years old, with 63 percent in favor of legal personal use.

The older the group, the lower the level of support. With 25 to 29-year-olds, 58 percent support it. With 35 to 44-year olds, support drops to 53 percent.

Strangely, with people ages 55 to 64, support actually climbs to 61 percent. Above that age range, support drops below 35 percent.

A very large majority of Wyomingites support medical access to marijuana. In 2014, 74 percent of those residents polled supported it. That number has climbed to 86 percent in the latest survey.

Support decreased for removing jail time for penalties for marijuana possession, but the drop is not statistically significant. In 2014, 66 percent of residents surveyed supported removing jail for possession of small amounts. That figure climbed to 72 percent in 2016 and dropped to 69 percent in the latest survey.

The 2018 survey was completed by 607 Wyoming residents, resulting in a margin of error of approximately ±4.0 percentage points.
