Gurley Overpass Opens this Weekend
(Gillette, Wyo.) The Gurley Overpass should be open for travel this weekend, despite a little issue with a small fire yesterday.
According to a release from the Campbell County Fire Department, firefighters responded to a report of a burning tarp on the north side of the overpass, around 2 p.m.yesterday. By the time firefighters arrived, the construction crew had already started to extinguish the fire.
City Civil Engineer Todd Merchen explained that the concrete being laid on the north side of the overpass decking needed to “wet cure,” and a thin layer of burlap was used to cover the area. Something hot was dropped in the area, igniting the burlap.
Merchen said other than a scorch mark, there is no damage to the concrete.
That north section was also the final piece of concrete poured in the renovation of the overpass.
The Gurley Overpass will be open to traffic until Sunday, Sept. 23, when it will close again for crews to apply a high-friction overlay on the entire surface. Not only does the epoxy help protect the newly replaced concrete, it will also provide additional traction and less sliding this winter.
The epoxy overlay is scheduled between Sept. 23 and Oct. 1, barring any unforeseen weather events.
