Fire Board Tables Search for New Chief
(Gillette, Wyo.) Last night, the Campbell County Joint Powers Fire Board decided to table the search for a new fire chief until next month.
Chairman Del Shelstad has been outspoken in his support of Interim Chief J.R. Fox to step into the position permanently. During the meeting, Shelstad said although he wasn’t part of the previous search process, he did not feel hiring an outside agency to conduct the search would yield better results.
County Appointed Member Ryan Gross told the rest of the board that although he has the utmost confidence that CCFD staff could handle the search for a new chief, he felt using an outside agency in the past had added a lot of value to the process.
Fox told the board, the last time the department contracted with an outside agency to find a new chief, the cost was around $40,000.
Bill Sims, the Wright appointee, said he was in favor of keeping the process in house.
After much discussion among board members and Fox, the board tasked Fire Department Administration to estimate the potential cost of conducting the hiring process in-house so the board could be better prepared to decide on which road to take.
