Gillette Saw the Largest Population Decline in the State in 2017

(Gillette, Wyo.) It’s no surprise that communities in Wyoming which rely heavily on the mineral industries lost population in 2017. However, Gillette took the biggest hit.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, ten Wyoming communities lost more than 1.5 percent of their population in 2017. Gillette tops that list, having lost 5.4 percent or just over 1,700 residents.

Campbell County as a whole saw a decrease of 5.2 percent, or roughly 2,500 residents.

Due to the downturn in the energy industry, the statewide population fell by 5,595 residents, the largest decline since 1989.

The report states that as of July 2017, over 47 percent of the population in Wyoming lives in ten cities with populations over 10,000.
