Neary to Run for Four-Year Seat on City Council

County 17 Breaking News

(Gillette, Wyo.) Though it’s only been a few days since Councilman Dan Barks announced that he will not seek re-election, a move has been made to claim the future vacant Ward 1 seat.

Councilman Shawn Neary has announced his intention to vacate his current two-year seat to run for the Barks’ four-year seat during the November election for the Gillette City Council.

“In my time on the council, I have really appreciated and respected the insight and opinion of Mr. Barks on the issues that we have been dealing with in regard to the city,” Neary said in a statement.

Neary says that his intention in running is to continue providing leadership and a progressive mindset for the citizens of Gillette as one of the Ward 1 City Council Members.

“I look forward to continuing to serve on the City Council for the next nine months and hopefully for the next four years,” Neary said in a statement.

Neary was appointed to represent Ward 1 in January after the untimely resignation of former Ward 1 Councilman Kevin McGrath.

McGrath had only served about one year of his term before citing personal reasons that would have reportedly limited the amount of time he could give to the duties of a councilperson.

He outpaced several other candidates that were interviewed on Dec. 12 during a City Council Work Session.

At the time, Ward 2 Councilman Tim Carsrud said that Neary was a very strong candidate and that he would be great for the City of Gillette.

During his interview, Neary demonstrated a deep-seated love for Gillette and a passion to serve, something Carsrud had said was felt by everyone on the council.

“His interview blew everyone away,” Mayor Louise Carter-King had said. “I think his x-factor was his passion.”

Neary is also currently the head coach of the Gillette College Men’s Pronghorn Basketball Team.
