Candidate Profile: Lynne Huskinson

(Gillette, Wyo.) Lynne Huskinson is among the 11 candidates putting in their name for the vacant position on Ward 1.

Huskinson moved to Gillette in 1977, when she was a senior in high school.

“Lakeway was a dirt road,” she recalls.

She said she would bring to the council a different perspective to the council.

“I would like to see more women in that position,” she explained.

She said she’d like to see more cooperation as well. Despite the varying perspectives, she thinks it’s important to work together.

“We got to get together and figure this thing out,” she said.

She’s worked in coal mines since she was 19, and with 40 years living here, she said she knows the town and its people well.

“A worker’s perspective is necessary if the council is to better understand those who labor in the energy industry and all workers who contribute to making our economy in Gillette,” Huskinson wrote in her application to the council.

Despite her experience with coal, she thinks it’s important to diversify the local economy. She’s watched over the decades the boom and bust cycle. Among the issues she wants to put forth on the council is the recycling center.

She said she believes more could have been done to support the CARE Recycling Center.

“We have a great potential to put people to work with recycling,” she said.

She said it would also lower the costs of the landfill, by diverting material away from it, as she pays $17 a month for her dumpster.

“For people on a fixed income that’s pretty pricey,” Huskinson said.

When it comes to budgeting, she said she’s very supportive of social services. She also wants to see city parks maintained.

“These excellently maintained assets bring people together and provide a healthy respite from busy lives,” she wrote in her application.

She also stated in her application that she wants to see the city maintain an inclusive atmosphere and that all citizens are treated with respect.

“The city of Gillette will thrive to the extent we are inclusive and respectful of all, particularly those who have been excluded in the past,” Huskinson wrote.

In addition to Huskinson, the current candidates include Rodger Solomon, Pam Boger, Terry Sjolin, Michael Surface, Jason Stovall, Bruce Brown, Ty Case, Shawn Neary, Darin Edmonds, and Matthew Williamson.

Shawn Neary and Darrin Edmonds did not return requests for interviews. Matthew Williamson was unable to schedule one.

The City Council will conduct interviews of all the applicants on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m. in the third-floor community room at City Hall. The council will pick a final appointee on Dec. 19 at the regular meeting of the city council.
