Upton High School Wins Performance Rating Appeal

(Gillette, Wyo.)  Weston County School District #7 went before the State Board of Education today via teleconference to appeal the Performance Rating of Upton High School.

According to Weston County School District #7 Superintendent Summer Stephens, Upton High School fell below the participation requirement of 95 percent when one of their students was absent for the ACT test.  Stephens said she’s worried the sub-par rating sends the wrong message to students and the community.   She went on to say that Upton High School improved in four out of the five areas graded by the Wyoming Accountability in Education Act rating.

Both Weston County School District #7 and the Department of Education were given ten minutes to present their cases on the appeal.  The state board members then had a lengthy discussion on WAEA which lays out the guidelines for the rating system.

The State Board of education ended up voting 7-4 today to change Upton High School’s performance rating from “Partially Meeting Expectations” to “Meeting Expectations.”  Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Jillian Balow abstained from voting due to her leadership role in the Department of Education.
