CCSD School Board Meeting

(Gillette, Wyo.) The Campbell County School Board met in regular session Tuesday night. Before getting down to the business of running the District, 4-J School Principal David Hardesty introduced five of the school’s students to share what they’ve been learning so far this year in the third and fourth grades.  The students shared a short story, web development projects, art and some hands on learning with the individual board members.  4-J is one of Campbell County’s unique rural schools located approximately 30 miles south of Gillette on Highway 50.  Current enrollment for the school is 41 students in grades K-6.

The School Board also officially recognized Hillcrest kindergarten teacher Sara Reed, Wyoming’s Teacher of the Year.  The Wyoming Department of Education presented Mrs. Reed with the distinction last month at an assembly at Hillcrest Elementary.  Last night Mrs. Reed said she’s humbled by the experience and speaking in front of adults is something she’s going to have to get used to. “I don’t teach every day to get awards.” Reed also thanked Hillcrest Elementary Principal Brad Winter for letting her think outside the box and do what’s best for the kids.

The meeting continued with academic reports from 4-J School and Prairie Wind Elementary.  Chairman Anne Ochs appointed Ken Clouston to the Campbell County Recreation Project Joint Powers Board.  The School Board approved the 2016-2017 comprehensive Annual Financial Report and an update to the District’s Suicide Prevention Policy.

Another School District Policy that is currently under review is Attendance Areas and Attendance Area Change Request.  Chairman Anne Ochs says there are currently over 800 students in the School district that are attending schools on an Area Change Request.  At issue is high school activities eligibility, which is not addressed in the current policy.  No action was taken last night by the School Board.
