(Gillette, Wyo.) It’s here. The much anticipated 2017 National High School Finals Rodeo (NHSFR) has come at last, and the timing couldn’t be better for peaceful Gillette, WY. With the massive influx of people, both small and big businesses can look for a welcome financial reprieve as people from all over set up their temporary homes at Cam-Plex.
County 17 caught up with a few businesses looking to make the most of the large amount of people in town for this year’s competition. Among them, stood Mark Smith, Marketing Manager of the Cam-Plex, who was notably and visibly excited about the amount of revenue that is expected to flow into Gillette’s economy as a result of NHSFR. From what Smith told us, based on a local study from previous NHSFR’s, Gillette could receive as much as $10.5 million just in outside revenue alone. Revenue courtesy of the large amount of people, many of whom are already here, that will fill the stadiums, arenas, barns, and other multi-event facilities at Cam-Plex.
“There’s almost 1,500 RV’s,” Smith said, speaking of the large amount of Campers easily visible in the campgrounds around Cam-Plex. “A little over 1500 atheletes. Over the ten days we’ll have 90,000 people go through, watching the rodeo.” And Smith’s estimates on the number of people camping wasn’t including the family and friends of each contestant who would no doubt have come to see them compete at the national, and in some cases, international level.
But, Gillette is not the only one to reap the benefits of such a large crowd. We spoke with a few vendors within the Wyoming Center at Cam-Plex who are going to be open for business at the NHSFR Trade Show this week. And it is inescabaply clear that some of these businesses look forward to the rodeo not just for the ability to make a buck, so to speak, but also for the incredible culture that comes with rodeo goers.
“This is one of the biggest shows of the year,” said Stan Redding, National Sales Manager of American Hat Company, Inc. “It’s a big deal. This is the Super Bowl of High School Rodeo.” For some of the 2017 NHSFR contestants, this is their last year competing at the high school level, as seniors graduate and move on to bigger, and hopefully better, things.
Cowboy hats are not the only thing for sale at this years NHSFR Trade Show, evident by the multitudes of vendor booths easily visible the second one walks through the door. Every vendor we spoke to said the same thing, NHSFR is a big deal for their business.
Come on down to the Cam-Plex and see for yourself the incredible experience that awaits you! From unique, one of a kind gifts , to breathtaking performances each night from this year’s rodeo contestants, beginning at 7:00 p.m. tomorrow night, Sunday, July 16th… the NHSFR is waiting for you.
