Unemployment Rate Continues to Fall in Campbell County

(Gillette, Wyo.) Statewide, the unemployment rate for April dropped to 4.3%, according to Wyoming Workforce Services. Out of 301,965 eligible workers in the labor force, 14,539 are unemployed as of June 1st, which puts the rate at 4.8%, but overall the trend in employment seems to be that jobs are on the rise.

The unemployment rate statewide peaked in May of 2016 at 5.6%, with the economy reeling from layoffs and a downturn in the coal and oil markets. Data gathered by the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services is based off of employer’s quarterly unemployment insurance tax filings.

Campbell County lost nearly 3400 jobs over the past year, but the unemployment rate here dropped from 8.4% in April of 2016 to 5.1% just this past April. Since the size of the labor force also shrunk, Wyoming Workforce estimates that the unemployment rate drop was affected by people moving out of the state.

The 5.1% rate for Campbell County is down from the month before, however: March was at 5.7%. This follows seasonal trends: when the weather gets warmer, employment in construction and other professional, retail, and business service industries picks up.

Data for May will be released June 20, 2017.
